A joint anti-poaching operation conducted on Katchal Island has resulted in the apprehension of a total of 10 Myanmar poachers, marking a significant success in combating illegal activities in the region.
The operation was set in motion after two vigilant fishermen reported the presence of foreign nationals in the West Bay area of Katchal on December 27, 2023. Responding swiftly, the anti-poaching team from PS Katchal mobilised on December 28, leading to the immediate arrest of six Myanmar poachers. Despite this success, a few managed to evade capture within the dense jungle terrain.
Recognising the severity of the situation, a collaborative effort was initiated, forming a joint anti-poaching operation involving personnel from the Police, IRBn, PMF, and the Andaman Nicobar command. Establishing a camp near the South Bay area, their efforts bore fruit on December 30 when a local resident of MRN Village reported the sighting of two poachers approaching the Village area. In a rapid response, the police team successfully apprehended the two Myanmar poachers, ensuring the safety of the local community.
Further reinforcing their commitment, on January 6, 2024, an additional two poachers were apprehended by the vigilant anti-poaching team during evening hours. This arrest brought the total count of captured Myanmarese poachers to 10.
Efforts are ongoing as authorities continue the search for any remaining poachers in the South Bay area. This series of successful apprehensions highlights the effectiveness of coordinated and unified efforts against illegal activities.
The public, especially local fishermen and villagers, are urged to share any credible information regarding the presence of foreign or suspected individuals with the local police for immediate verification or apprehension.
The collaborative success between local law enforcement and civilians underscores a shared commitment to combat illegal activities in the region, safeguarding the ecological balance of the emerald islands.
