The Khadi Mahotsav, an annual extravaganza celebrating India’s timeless textile heritage, has concluded with resounding success in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The month-long event, held from October 2 to October 31, showcased the elegance and significance of Khadi, uniting tradition and innovation.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands actively participated in the Mahotsav, organized by the A&N Islands Khadi and Village Industries Board. A series of workshops and seminars were conducted for students from three colleges – ITI, ANCOL, and JNRM – on October 18, 20, and 26, 2023, respectively. These programs aimed to educate and inspire college students about Khadi’s rich heritage and the importance of making responsible choices in their lives, drawing the participation of approximately 770 students.

Throughout the event, from October 17 to 31, the Board erected a Selfie Point and showcased a Charkha (spinning wheel) in three different locations, including the Sagarika Government Emporium campus, Udyog Parisar, Tagore Government College of Education, and Marina Park premises. These initiatives were designed to create awareness among tourists and local Islanders about the cultural significance and heritage of Khadi.

As part of the grand celebration, the Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan, the Departmental Sales Outlet of the Khadi and Village Industries Board at Middle Point, organised a Khadi Sales-cum-Exhibition, offering a generous 25% discount on all the latest Khadi products. The event also featured a rally that commenced at the Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan, proceeded down Bengali Club Road, and culminated at the Directorate of Industries.

The rally, a significant event promoting the use of Khadi, highlighted its cultural importance and encouraged the local community to embrace this sustainable fabric. It witnessed the active participation of officials from the A&NI KVIB, Industries Department, District Industries Centre, and many artisans engaged in the production of handicrafts and Village Industries products. The rally concluded with participants taking an e-pledge, led by Mr. Abhishek Bhukal, Director of Industries.
