KVK Nimbudera Conducts Training on Modern Techniques in Paddy Cultivation

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nimbudera, organized a three-day training programme on “Modern Agricultural Techniques for Paddy Cultivation” from August 21 to 23 at Samiti Hall, Rangat, with the objective of equipping local farmers with advanced knowledge and practical skills to enhance paddy productivity under island conditions.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Balamurugan, Pradhan of Parnasala Panchayat, who urged farmers to adopt scientific and sustainable practices to increase yield and profitability.

Dr. V. Damodaran, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Nimbudera, underscored the significance of paddy cultivation for food security and livelihoods in the islands. He stressed that modern scientific practices can help farmers address challenges posed by limited resources and unpredictable climate.

Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Ms. Shirley Thomas, briefed participants on various government schemes, with special focus on the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), highlighting its role in providing financial protection against crop losses.

As part of the technical sessions, Mr. Rakesh Dawar, SMS (Agronomy), detailed improved methods of seed selection, nursery preparation, and transplanting techniques suited to island conditions. He emphasized integrated nutrient management and trained farmers to identify nutrient deficiencies and physiological disorders in paddy. A live demonstration on the use of the Conoweeder was also conducted in farmers’ fields.

Er. Manoj Kumar, SMS (Agricultural Engineering), explained the benefits of mechanisation in paddy farming, highlighting how modern tools can reduce drudgery, save time, and improve efficiency. Mr. Subam Debroy, SMS (Aquaculture), spoke on paddy-cum-fish culture, while Mr. Yatharth Sharma, SMS (Home Science), guided farmers on post-harvest processing and value addition.

The training saw the participation of 31 farmers and farm women, who gained practical insights into modern paddy cultivation techniques aimed at boosting productivity and sustainability in the islands.
