In compliance with the directives of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), New Delhi, the Andaman & Nicobar State Legal Services Authority, in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), organised a special program to commemorate Legal Services Day on November 9th, 2023. The event took place at the auditorium of Tagore Government College of Education in Port Blair.
The inauguration of the program was marked by the esteemed presence of Mr. Anupam Mukherjee, Ld. District & Sessions Judge-Cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, accompanied by other Judicial Officers and dignitaries. The ceremony began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a melodious welcome song performed by the students of Andaman Law College.
During her inaugural speech, the Ld. Secretary, DLSA, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, shed light on the significance of Legal Services Day and emphasised its role in promoting access to justice.
Mr. Anupam Mukherjee, in his address, highlighted the accomplishments of the District Legal Services Authority, A&N Islands. He also shared forthcoming initiatives aimed at improving the accessibility of legal aid for all citizens, irrespective of their financial constraints.
The event saw the participation of notable figures including Ms. Smitha R., IAS, Secretary (Law) In-Charge, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Mr. Bhawani Shankar Sharma, Ld. Additional District & Sessions Judge, Port Blair, and other esteemed individuals. They addressed the audience, explaining the objectives and aims of Legal Services Day, the Legal Services Authority Act of 1987, and the various benefits available to litigants and the general public.
The informative sessions concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Krishnakoli Mukherjee, Ld. Judicial Magistrate First Class, 1st Court, Port Blair, expressing gratitude to all the participants and organizers for their valuable contributions to the success of the event. The program served as a platform to promote legal awareness and underscored the commitment to ensuring justice for all in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
