A remarkable feat of medical skill and teamwork unfolded at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) when a 35-year-old male labourer originally from Odisha and currently working in Sri Vijaya Puram, Mr. Anil Minj, was brought in with life-threatening injuries after a fall from the third floor of a building.
At approximately 8:30 PM on 15th Sep 2024, Mr. Minj arrived at the G B Pant Hospital Casualty with an exposed iron rod impaled through his body, having sustained a severe penetrating injury. The rod had entered through his lower back and exited through his lower abdomen, leaving him suspended mid-air over the rod, with portions of his bowels protruding from the injury site.
A dedicated team from the Department of General Surgery (Unit-1) at ANIIMS, led by Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Mustafa, quickly mobilized to perform an exploratory laparotomy, a major life-saving surgery. The surgical team, which included Anaesthetist Dr. Aashik and Senior Nursing Officer Raina Singh, faced the daunting task of addressing multiple injuries.
Upon opening the abdomen, the surgeons discovered perforations in both the small and large bowels, as well as damage to the back muscles and the peritoneum. Each perforation was meticulously repaired, and bleeding was controlled effectively. The team successfully removed the rod without any complications.
Following the surgery, Mr. Minj was admitted to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring. Thanks to the diligent care he received, he made a remarkable recovery. He was able to start taking oral feeds, and his surgical site remained healthy throughout his post-operative care.
After a successful recovery, Mr. Minj was discharged from the hospital, demonstrating the life-saving capabilities of the medical professionals at ANIIMS and the importance of prompt, skilled intervention in critical situations.
