Swaraj Dweep, the world renowned tourist destination is currently facing upto 8 hours of power cut everyday. The residents of the Islands are facing a lot of inconvenience because of the power cuts.
Swaraj Dweep has hundreds of commercial establishments because of being a major tourism destination and long power cuts in the Island also haunt the visiting tourists. Most of the commercial establishments in the Island have their own Diesel Powered Generator sets which comes to the rescue of the management of resorts and hotels, who otherwise have to face the brunt of unhappy customers.
Long power cuts have been haunting the residents of the Island since the last 10 days. The residents of Swaraj Dweep under the leadership of their Ex-PRI members also protested near the Electricity Office since the last two days, demanding normalcy in the power supply.
The protests were called off after the intervention of Mr. Hari Kallikat, SDM, South Andaman who assured to sort out the issue.
Mr. Sanjay Roy one of the Ex-PRI of Swaraj Dweep while speaking to Nicobar Times informed that the residents are facing a lot of issues because of the long power cuts. He added that for two days the general public along with political leaders protested for restoring normalcy in the power supply. He further added that a time frame will be given to the Electricity Department to rectify the faults and shortcomings and after which if the normalcy in power supply is not restored the general public along with political leaders will resort to protest.
Nicobar Times has been informed by the sources that the current power crises situation in Swaraj Dweep is arising because one of the DG Sets of Electricity Department is faulty and the agreement for hire of DG Sets has not been renewed, which has led to shortfall of power generation capacity at the Island.
