Mahila Kisan Diwas Empowers Women Farmers in Car Nicobar

The Department of Agriculture, Car Nicobar, in collaboration with the Union Territory Agricultural Technology Management Agency (UTATMA), recently organised a Mahila Kisan Diwas (Women Farmers’ Day) in conjunction with the Rabi Campaign. The event took place at the Community Hall in Kinyuka Village, Car Nicobar, and brought together prominent figures and local farmers to celebrate and promote the pivotal role of women in agriculture.

Present at the event were Mr. S. Fred, 3rd Headman, Mr. Odniel Timothy, 4th Headman, Ms. Brigit Patrick, Women Representative of Kinyuka Village, and Assistant Director (Agri), Car Nicobar.

Ms. Sreedevi, Assistant Director (Agri), Car Nicobar, extended a warm welcome to the attendees and emphasised the vital role played by women in the farming and allied sectors. She shed light on the significance of their contributions to the agricultural landscape.

Miss Ashwini Charles, ATM, provided insights into the ongoing Rabi campaign and National Schemes for Women, along with an overview of various departmental initiatives aimed at women in agriculture. Mr. Shaji Thomas, the Fisheries Superintendent, elaborated on the Matsya Sampada Yojana and other ongoing schemes of the Department related to fisheries.

One of the highlights of the event was the success stories shared by three remarkable women farmers from Car Nicobar: Ms. Brigit Patrick, Ms. Molina, and Ms. Deckla, all residents of Kinyuka. They recounted their journeys and achievements in agriculture, inspiring their fellow women farmers to adopt more scientific methods of vegetable cultivation, as well as embrace an integrated farming system.

The Mahila Kisan Diwas served as an empowering platform, encouraging women to actively engage in agriculture and related activities, fostering innovation and sustainability within the farming sector. The event highlighted the collective effort of the Department of Agriculture, Car Nicobar, and UTATMA in promoting women’s participation and contributions to agricultural development in the region.
