Port Blair, 23 January 2024

In a devastating incident, a massive fire broke out in the heart of Rangat at the Shyam Sundar Temple Vegetable Market, leaving multiple shops in ashes and causing severe damage to the surrounding area. The incident occurred in the early hours of 23rd January 2024, with the flames reportedly starting at around 1:10 AM, as per local accounts.

The affected market complex, home to numerous small and large shops, has been a staple of the Rangat community for several decades, established shortly after the settlement in the area. The exact number of shops gutted in the blaze remains unconfirmed, given the diverse range of businesses present in the market.

Mr. Sanjeeb Saha, a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Rangat, spoke to Nicobar Times and expressed the challenges faced in assessing the extent of the damage due to the variety of shops affected. He revealed that the Fire & Emergency Service Department promptly responded to the emergency, dispatching multiple fire engines and personnel to control the rapidly spreading flames.

Firefighters not only from the local station but also from other areas in North and Middle Andaman District rushed to Rangat to provide crucial support in battling the blaze. As of this morning, the firefighting efforts continue, with the Fire & Emergency Service Department still working to extinguish lingering flames.

While the exact property loss remains uncertain at this time, the local community has rallied around the emergency responders. Reports indicate that the general public of Rangat actively assisted the Fire and Emergency Service Department, offering support in any way possible. Concerned citizens also attempted to salvage valuable commodities from some of the shops, although only a minimal portion of the inventory could be rescued.

Despite the extensive property damage, the fortunate news is that there have been no reported casualties or injuries resulting from the fire accident. Authorities and locals alike are focused on containing the situation and providing assistance to the affected shopkeepers during this challenging time. The investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to commence once the situation is under control.
