Man Arrested for Cultivating Ganja Plant in Kalighat

A 37-year-old man, Kiran Barman, was arrested on Monday for allegedly cultivating a ganja (cannabis) plant in his residential premises at Ward No. 3, Kalighat, North and Middle Andaman. The arrest and seizure were carried out following a raid conducted by the Kalighat Police Station.

According to the FIR, police received credible information that the accused had been growing a cannabis plant in his vegetable garden. Acting on the tip-off, the Station House Officer, SI Shibendra Nath Halder, informed SDPO Diglipur, Mr. Chandan GS (DANIPS), who directed the formation of a search team after completing all formalities.

A raiding team led by SI Halder, along with HC Ashok Samaddar, HC (IRBn) Santosh Kr. Nair, PC Samresh Mistry, PC Ranjit Biswas, PC Sujit Kumar and LPC Elieen, proceeded to the location accompanied by two independent witnesses. During the search, police found one ganja plant measuring 290 cm (9 feet 6 inches) and weighing 1.215 kilograms in the vegetable garden beside the accused’s house. The plant tested positive for cannabis using a drug detection kit and was seized on the spot.

The entire search and seizure process was documented through photographs and videography using the E-Shakshya mobile application. The accused allegedly confessed that he had cultivated the plant for personal use and occasionally served it to friends on payment.

Following due procedure, Kiran Barman was arrested under Section 20(a)(i) of the NDPS Act, 1985, for illegal cultivation of cannabis.
