The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services continued its island-wide mass awareness campaign on “Stray Dog Bite Prevention and Management” with heightened intensity on December 10 and 11, reaching over 500 schoolchildren and teachers across South Andaman.

As part of the campaign, an awareness programme was conducted at Government Middle School, Humfrygunj, where Dr. Ninad Lawhale, Senior Veterinary Officer, Manglutan, interacted with students and sensitised them on safe behaviour around both pet and stray dogs. He explained how to recognise signs of aggression in dogs, common reasons that may provoke dog bites, and simple preventive measures to avoid such incidents.

A similar interactive session was organised at Government Middle School, New Bimblitan, where Dr. V. Subramanian, Veterinary Officer, Garacharma, along with Ms. T. Zareena, Veterinary Compounder, educated students on dog bite prevention, stray dog management, and the importance of responsible behaviour within the community.

During the programmes, the Department also highlighted the critical role of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme in controlling the stray dog population and in maintaining the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a rabies-free region. The campaign forms part of the Department’s sustained efforts to create awareness among young citizens and promote public safety through education and responsible animal management.
