Mass Deworming Drive Ahead of FMD Vaccination in Sri Vijaya Puram

The 31st round of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination is set to begin on June 2, 2025, in Sri Vijaya Puram under the Government of India’s flagship National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP). In preparation, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services has launched a mass deworming drive across the region to improve the overall health of livestock ahead of the vaccination campaign.

Veterinary experts emphasize that deworming bovines before vaccination helps elicit a stronger immune response, ensuring better efficacy of the vaccine. Animals in poor health or under stress from parasitic infections may not respond effectively to the vaccination, which could reduce the protection offered.

To address this, veterinary institutions throughout Sri Vijaya Puram have been mobilized to deworm not only bovines but also other livestock and poultry. The initiative aims to reduce parasitic loads and ensure optimal health conditions for all animals ahead of the FMD vaccination drive.

Cattle owners, as well as those raising other livestock and poultry, are urged to bring their animals for deworming. Local Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), Municipal Ward Councillors, and Ward Members have been requested to help spread awareness about the importance of deworming and to encourage community participation.

The NADCP aims to control and eventually eradicate Foot and Mouth Disease, a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals and poses a serious threat to livestock health and rural livelihoods.
