Mrs. Nambiamma, a retired Headmistress of the Education Department and one of the seven persons onboard the helicopter that ditched near Mayabunder on February 24, passed away during treatment at G.B. Pant Hospital here on Friday evening.

According to official sources, the helicopter had ditched approximately 300 metres short of the Mayabunder helipad enroute from Sri Vijaya Puram via Rangat. Mrs. Nambiamma, a senior citizen, reportedly ingested water during the incident. She was administered first aid immediately after rescue and shifted to the District Hospital in Mayabunder for treatment.

As her condition did not permit airlifting, she was transported by road (ambulance) to Sri Vijaya Puram the following day for advanced medical care. She had been undergoing treatment at G.B. Pant Hospital since then.

Despite medical efforts, she succumbed on Friday evening.

Sources informed Nicobar Times that the Administration had initiated arrangements to shift her to the mainland by air ambulance for further advanced treatment. However, her condition deteriorated before the transfer could take place.

With her demise, the February 24 helicopter ditching incident has claimed its first life. Mrs. Nambiamma had devoted her life to the service of the people of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands through her long career in education.
