A medical team led by Dr. Anwar Moosa, District TB Officer for Nicobar District, recently conducted awareness programmes on the prevention and control of Tuberculosis (TB) under the National TB Elimination Programme in Car Nicobar. The sessions were held at GSS School, Sawai, and GSS School, Big Lapathy, with approximately 200 students in attendance.

The programme began with a welcome address from Dr. Deepika Sharma, Medical Officer at BJRH, who introduced the importance of the session. Ms. Ansavi, TB Health Visitor, followed with a multimedia presentation on TB, educating the students on the disease’s causes, symptoms, and treatment.

Dr. Moosa then provided a comprehensive overview of TB control methods, stressing the importance of early detection and strict adherence to treatment. He highlighted the need for increased community awareness and the reduction of stigma surrounding the disease. He also shared details about the incentive packages available for TB patients and community volunteers. A TB champion was invited to share their personal journey with TB diagnosis and treatment, offering a relatable perspective to the students.

Encouraging the students to be ambassadors for TB awareness, Dr. Moosa urged them to share the information with their families and communities. The programme concluded with an engaging quiz competition, where students participated enthusiastically, and prizes were awarded to the winners.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to eliminate Tuberculosis in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands through community education and involvement.
