Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the Member of Parliament representing Andaman and Nicobar Islands, met with the Hon’ble Lt. Governor at Raj Niwas on January 17, 2024. The meeting addressed several crucial issues, with one of the prominent topics being the proposal to install a statue of Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar in a prominent location in Port Blair.

During the meeting, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma emphasized the universal significance of Tamil Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar and his teachings encapsulated in the renowned “Thirukkural,” consisting of 1330 couplets. He highlighted that Thiruvalluvar’s influence extends beyond literature, deeply impacting various facets of South Indian culture. The Member of Parliament underscored the enduring impact of Thiruvalluvar’s moral and philosophical principles, emphasizing their integration into the consciousness of those who embrace his teachings.

Drawing attention to the global recognition of Thirukkural, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma noted that even the Prime Minister of India had referenced it in his address to the United Nations. He commended Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar for penning universal teachings that benefit humanity.

The Member of Parliament revealed that the Andaman Tamizhar Sangam had approached him with a heartfelt request to install a statue of Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar in a prominent place in Port Blair. Should the allocation of land in such a location prove challenging, he suggested the installation of a life-size statue at either Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Mohanpura, or Government Sr. Sec. School, Bathubasthi (Tamil Medium). It was disclosed that the statue of Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar has already been brought to Port Blair by the Andaman Tamizhar Sangam.

Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma earnestly requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor to grant permission for the installation of the statue, emphasizing its potential as a symbol of wisdom that could guide students, individuals, and the local society towards ethical and harmonious living. The Member of Parliament expressed his full support for the installation and its potential positive impact on the cultural and educational landscape of Port Blair.
