The North & Middle Andaman Police once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to justice, ensuring the swift conviction of an accused in a heinous crime against a minor.
In a landmark judgment, the Special Judge (POCSO), Mr. Subhajit Basu, sentenced the accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹20,000 in Crime No. 41/2023 of PS Baratang.
This conviction was the result of an exhaustive and meticulous investigation led by SI Silpa Dutta, the Investigation Officer, and SI Surjit Bhattacharjee, SHO, PS Baratang. Their dedication, professionalism, and relentless pursuit of justice ensured that the accused was held accountable for his crimes.
The case, registered on December 13, 2023, unfolded a shocking betrayal of trust. The minor victim, who lived in her parental home, was repeatedly sexually assaulted by her elder brother—a place and a person meant to offer protection.
Upon receiving the victim’s complaint, the police acted swiftly, invoking Sections 5(1)(n), 6, 9(1)(n), and 10 of the POCSO Act, 2012. From the moment the complaint was lodged, the police spared no effort in collecting evidence, recording statements, and ensuring a watertight case.
Their methodical approach and dedicated effort played a pivotal role in securing the conviction, ensuring that the survivor received the justice she deserved.
The Andaman & Nicobar Police reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy toward crimes against children. They emphasised that such offences would be met with the strictest legal action, setting a strong precedent that justice will always prevail. The police also urged the public to be vigilant and report any crime or suspicious activity at their nearest police station or via the helpline numbers 100, 112, or 03192-273344. Informers’ identities will be kept confidential, and they will be suitably rewarded for credible information. (Story Based on PR)
