In a remarkable turn of events, Mrs. Chitra Devi, a 24-year-old resident of Rangat, gave birth to a healthy baby boy while aboard the passenger vessel Rani Lakshmi. The unexpected delivery took place during the vessel’s journey from Rangat to Port Blair on June 23, 2023.
Mrs. Chitra Devi had been referred from Rangat to G.B Pant Hospital in Port Blair due to complications identified by doctors in Rangat. However, before reaching her destination, the expectant mother unexpectedly went into labor as the ship departed from Swaraj Dweep.
Thankfully, medical staff were accompanying Mrs. Chitra Devi. The ship crew promptly provided all necessary support, including bedsheets, towels, and water. As a precaution, male passengers were relocated to another area of the vessel to ensure privacy and facilitate the delivery process.
At approximately 1800 Hrs, Mrs. Chitra Devi successfully delivered a healthy baby boy onboard the vessel. Both mother and baby were reported to be in good health following the birth.
Authorities were immediately notified, and arrangements were made for an ambulance to be present at the port to offer further assistance upon the vessel’s arrival.
Capt. Atul Kumar Singh, Director of Shipping Services for the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, personally visited the ship upon its arrival in Port Blair. He commended the efforts of the ship’s staff and the accompanying medical personnel for their swift response and exceptional support during the unexpected delivery.
Capt. Atul Kumar Singh also bestowed blessings and shagun upon the newborn child and mother, celebrating the miracle of life amid the extraordinary circumstances.
