In a significant initiative aimed at fostering a reading culture and improving access to knowledge resources, the Directorate of Education has inaugurated a Mobile Library Service at North Bay under the Deputy Education Office, Wimberlygunj. The service is intended to encourage reading habits among students, tourists, and the general public visiting the island.
The Mobile Library Service was formally inaugurated on February 7, 2026, by the chief guest, Ms. Archana Singh, Deputy Director of Education (Planning) and Nodal Officer, State Library, in the presence of senior officials of the Directorate of Education. Dr. Manoharan, Deputy Education Officer, Wimberlygunj, Ms. Maryam Bibi, Zilla Parishad Member, Bambooflat, and Ms. Rasheeda, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Hopetown, were also present on the occasion. The inaugural programme witnessed active participation from officials of the Education Department and members of the public.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Archana Singh described the Mobile Library Service as a unique initiative aimed at taking books beyond the confines of traditional library spaces and making them accessible at tourist locations as well as in remote areas of the islands. She emphasised the importance of encouraging reading as a lifelong habit and highlighted the role of such initiatives in promoting knowledge sharing among diverse sections of society.
With the objective of strengthening library services across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and attracting both tourists and local residents towards reading, the Directorate of Education has proposed to introduce two more Mobile Library Services at Swaraj Dweep and Car Nicobar in the near future.
