A Modern Gym was constructed at Perka Village, Car Nicobar long back and was inaugurated by the then Chief Secretary, Mr. Anand Prakash. The Gym was built under ITDP, Nicobar and the equipment of the Gym has reportedly been provided by the Sports Department, Andaman and Nicobar Administration.
The locals informed that the Block Sports Officer has been entrusted with the management of the Gym. A Trainer used to manage the gym until his contract expired in the year 2019. After 2019 the contract of the trainer has not been renewed and the gym is operating without proper management.
Many equipments of the gym are non-functional because of broken cables and parts and no attempt has been made to maintain those equipments. Some dumbbells and other small equipments have also reportedly been stolen.
Earlier a nominal fee used to be charged from every user, but now the keys are kept at the premises and anyone is free to enter the gym at any time of the day and there is no accountability.
Gym users are unhappy about the mismanagement at the gym and have demanded that all the equipments should be repaired and a trainer should be made available for proper management of the gym.
Nicobar Times tried contacting the Block Sports Officer over the phone but the call didn’t go through.
