Member of Parliament for Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, has taken a proactive stance by appealing to the Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice (IC), Government of India, advocating for the allocation of seats in premier government law colleges for students hailing from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In a formal letter addressed to the Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice (IC), Government of India, the Member of Parliament expressed deep concern regarding the dearth of postgraduate opportunities in the field of law within the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. While acknowledging the pivotal role played by Andaman Law College in providing undergraduate legal education, Mr. Sharma highlighted the conspicuous absence of postgraduate programs, particularly a Master of Law (LLM) course.
Each year witnesses the graduation of approximately 40 to 50 bright and talented students from Andaman Law College, armed with a robust legal foundation. However, the absence of an LLM course within the Andaman and Nicobar Islands poses a significant impediment to the academic and professional aspirations of these students.
The Member of Parliament underscored the myriad challenges faced by aspiring law students from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands when endeavouring to pursue postgraduate studies in mainland India. Financial constraints associated with enrolment in private colleges on the mainland render the pursuit of higher education an unattainable dream for many.
In light of these challenges, Mr. Sharma fervently urged the Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice (IC), Government of India, to consider allocating a minimum of two seats in premier government law colleges across mainland India for students hailing from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Furthermore, he emphasised that facilitating access to esteemed government law colleges would serve to bridge the gap in postgraduate opportunities and empower the youth of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to realise their academic and professional potential. Such a measure, Mr. Sharma asserted, would not only enrich the educational landscape of the islands but also contribute significantly to their overall development.
