Member of Parliament, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has raised concern over the continuing shortage and delayed delivery of LPG cylinders across several parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, urging the Union Government to initiate permanent corrective measures.
In a representation to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, the MP said domestic households and commercial establishments were facing serious inconvenience due to irregular distribution and long waiting periods for refills. He attributed the crisis to shortcomings in the existing supply mechanism, including inadequate monitoring of authorised distributors, a limited number of full-fledged distributors and heavy reliance on smaller agents lacking storage, manpower and transport facilities.
According to the MP, the situation is acute in Guptapara, Wandoor, Ferrargunj, Dairy Farm area of Sri Vijaya Puram Tehsil, Car Nicobar, Campbell Bay and surrounding regions. Consumers from these localities have reportedly submitted mass petitions demanding immediate relief.
Seeking a permanent resolution, Ray requested a comprehensive review of consumer grievances and the appointment of additional authorised distributors as per prescribed norms to ensure wider coverage and timely supply. He has also urged the Ministry to issue necessary directions to Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. and the Consumer Affairs Department of the A&N Administration to ensure uninterrupted availability of LPG cylinders across the Islands.
