Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, along with a delegation of the Fishermen Welfare Association and members of the fishing community, met the Chief Secretary of the A&N Administration today to highlight pressing issues faced by the fishermen.

The delegation raised serious concern over the suspension of electricity supply to the Modern Fish Market at Mohanpura, which has disrupted the daily livelihood of the fishing community. The power supply was reportedly cut off due to non-clearance of electricity dues accumulated over the years by the Self Help Group responsible for the market’s upkeep under an agreement with the Municipal Council.

Another long-pending matter regarding the construction of a new fish market at Dignabad was also taken up during the meeting. The Hon’ble MP stressed the importance of expediting the project, stating that it would provide better facilities and livelihood support for the fishermen in the area.

Responding to the concerns, the Chief Secretary assured that the issue of the Modern Fish Market at Mohanpura is under active review and will be resolved within a week, keeping in mind the livelihood and welfare of the fishing community.
