Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has written to Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah, requesting swift action for the revival and construction of the long-pending Mount Manipur Memorial at a suitable location in South Andaman.

In his letter, the MP highlighted that the memorial project was conceived during the Home Minister’s visit to the islands on 17th October 2021, when Mount Harriet was officially renamed as Mount Manipur to honour the 23 Manipuri freedom fighters of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, including Maharaja Kulachandra Dhwaja Singh, who were exiled to the islands during British colonial rule.

Mr. Ray expressed concern over the delay in implementing the “Sword Monument” project—an important component of the memorial initiative—despite the passage of over three years since its announcement. He stressed the significance of the monument as a tribute to national heroes, particularly recalling the sacrifice of Yuvraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General, who were executed on 13th August 1891, a day now observed as Patriots’ Day in Manipur.

Copies of the letter were also marked to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and Chief Secretary of A&N Islands for necessary action, and to Mr. Mukeswar Lall, Member of the UT Heritage Committee and Founder of the Kalipani Museum, for information and follow-up.

The MP underlined that the timely construction of the Mount Manipur Memorial would strengthen the emotional and historical bonds between the Northeast and the Andaman Islands, promote national integration, and inspire patriotism among citizens and visitors. He added that the project could also give a significant boost to heritage tourism and historical awareness in the region.
