Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has raised concerns about the lack of essential medical services at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Rangat, Middle Andaman. In a letter addressed to the Lt Governor of the Islands, Mr. Ray has highlighted several pressing issues, particularly regarding healthcare for women and patients with chronic conditions.

The absence of a permanent gynaecologist at CHC Rangat has become a major problem for local women, especially expectant mothers. Despite the availability of facilities like an ultrasound machine, women are being forced to travel to Port Blair for routine check-ups and deliveries, causing significant inconvenience and hardship. Mr. Ray emphasized the need for the immediate appointment of a gynaecologist to address these concerns.

In addition to the lack of gynaecological care, the CHC is also without a medical specialist. Many residents suffering from conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer are not receiving the necessary treatment due to this shortage. Mr. Ray stressed that the posting of a medical specialist is crucial to meet the needs of these patients.

Another critical issue raised in the letter is the outdated and unreliable X-ray machine at CHC Rangat. The existing equipment is insufficient for the growing medical needs of the community, and Mr. Ray has called for the immediate installation of a new, advanced X-ray machine. Furthermore, he pointed out that the X-ray unit is currently staffed by only one technician, leading to disruptions in service when the technician is unavailable. The MP has urged the appointment of an additional X-ray technician to ensure the smooth functioning of the unit.

Mr. Ray also highlighted the cramped and poorly designed X-ray room, calling for its renovation and expansion to better accommodate patients and staff.

The letter underscores the need for urgent action to improve healthcare services at CHC Rangat, ensuring that the people of Middle Andaman, particularly women and those with chronic illnesses, have access to essential medical care without the need to travel long distances.
