Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition and lack of basic amenities at the Boys’ Hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM), located near the college complex.
During a recent informal visit to the hostel and interaction with students, the MP found that inadequate supervision and poor management by the concerned authorities have led to severe hardships for both male and female students of JNRM.
He pointed out several issues faced by the hostel residents, including non-availability of essential facilities such as a reliable water supply and non-functional electrical appliances like fans, refrigerators, and bathroom fittings. Repairs and replacements, he noted, often take as long as three to six months to be attended to.
The MP also highlighted unhygienic conditions in the hostel, with poorly maintained bathrooms and surroundings. He expressed concern over delays in the disbursal of student stipends — in some cases, exceeding six months — and the lack of revision in stipend amounts, which have remained at ₹1,500 since 2015 despite rising living costs.
Other issues raised include the absence of a proper drainage system leading to waterlogging during rains, roof leakages that remain unaddressed, and the non-utilization of a newly constructed hostel building, which has reportedly remained idle for the past two years.
Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has urged the Chief Secretary, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, to take immediate cognizance of these lapses and ensure prompt restoration of all essential facilities. He emphasized that the welfare of students — the future of these islands — must be accorded the highest priority.
