In a bid to enhance regional connectivity and bolster tourism, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, the Hon’ble Member of Parliament for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has formally requested the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr. Ram Mohan Naidu, to sanction a direct flight route connecting Madurai and Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair).
In his letter, Mr. Ray highlighted that Madurai Airport serves as a crucial transportation hub not only for Tamil Nadu but also for neighbouring states such as Kerala and Karnataka. He pointed out that many residents of Sri Vijaya Puram, especially those from Southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala, frequently travel to Madurai to visit their hometowns.
A direct flight between Madurai and Sri Vijaya Puram, Mr. Ray emphasized, would significantly benefit the sizeable population of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, providing easier access to this vital region. He also noted the potential for such a route to strengthen cultural and religious tourism between the two destinations.
The MP underscored that the introduction of this new air link would not only make travel more convenient for the local population but would also contribute to the tourism sector in both Madurai and Sri Vijaya Puram. This, in turn, could boost the local economy and foster greater regional connectivity.
