MP Urges Immediate Action for Welfare of Baratang Fisherfolk

Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the distinguished Member of Parliament representing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has amplified the urgency surrounding the plight of the fisherfolk community residing in Baratang Island. Addressing a series of critical challenges, Sharma directed a letter to the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, urging immediate attention to several pressing matters that significantly impact the daily lives of local fishermen.

In the missive, the Member of Parliament underscored multiple crucial issues, placing emphasis on the construction of essential infrastructure and provision of resources necessary for the safety and sustenance of the fisherfolk.

Primary Concerns Highlighted:

1. Floating Fiber Jetty Construction: Sharma emphasized the imperative need for a floating fiber jetty at Khari Basti, Nilambur Ward No. 01. This critical infrastructure is crucial to safeguard fishermen who currently face hazards such as crocodile attacks.

2. Fishing Net Mending Shed: In light of space constraints, Sharma urged the construction of a fishing net mending shed at Khari Basti, Nilambur Ward No. 01, pinpointing the location between the residences of Mr. Ramesh and Mr. Dharma.

3. Fish Landing Jetty Construction: The absence of a fish landing jetty has posed substantial challenges for fishermen during unloading. The Member of Parliament called for immediate initiation of construction for a fish landing jetty at Khari Basti Nilambur Ward No. 01.

4. Water Tank Establishment: Sharma advocated for the immediate construction of a 2000-litres capacity water tank near the proposed fish landing jetty. This infrastructure is crucial to address the prevailing lack of adequate water facilities in the area.

5. Fishing Equipment Provision: The Member of Parliament urged the Fisheries Department to directly supply fishing nets and other essential materials to fishermen, aligning with government norms and regulations.

6. Timber Provision: To facilitate dinghy repairs, Sharma called upon the Forest Department to provide necessary sawn timber to the fishermen in need.

7. Land Allotment: Advocating for the betterment of the impoverished community, Sharma pressed for the allocation of land to fishermen residing in Khari Basti Nilambur Ward No. 01, highlighting the manifold benefits it would bring.

8. Regular Visits by Fisheries Inspector:  Sharma proposed regular visits by the Fisheries Inspector to Baratang Island, emphasizing the necessity to understand the actual challenges faced by the fishermen community firsthand.

The Member of Parliament underscored the immediate necessity for the Chief Secretary’s intervention and prompt action to address these pressing issues. The initiatives proposed aim to significantly enhance the livelihoods and well-being of the fisherfolk in Baratang Island.
