Member of Parliament, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has urgently called upon the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to address the deteriorating condition of the Chatham Bridge. In an official letter to the Chief Secretary, Sharma emphasized the bridge’s vital role as a lifeline for residents and businesses, facilitating the daily commute of thousands and serving as a critical link for essential services.
The bridge, currently showing visible signs of disrepair, poses a significant risk to public safety and impedes the smooth flow of traffic. Sharma stressed the need for immediate restoration and major repairs to ensure the bridge’s continued functionality.
The Chatham Bridge serves as a crucial connection between Port Blair and remote areas in South Andaman, including Bambooflat, Wimberlygunj, and surrounding regions as Vehicle Ferry Jetty is located on Chatham Island. It is also essential for heavy cargo transportation through Chatham Wharf, tourism to the historic Chatham Saw Mill, and the daily operations of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration’s largest power plant located on Chatham Island.
Given the bridge’s pivotal role in the Islands’ transportation network, Sharma urged the Chief Secretary to expedite the necessary measures for repair and restoration. He emphasized that timely action is crucial to prevent disruptions to daily life, avert potential safety hazards, and ensure the continued economic and social well-being of the Islands.
