National De-Worming Day was observed across all Government and private schools, as well as Anganwadi Centres in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Wednesday, with a focus on protecting children from intestinal worm infections.
To mark the occasion, a State-level programme was organised by the Directorate of Health Services in association with the UT Health Mission, in close coordination with the Directorate of Social Welfare and the Directorate of Education. The event was held at the Conference Hall of Government Girls Senior Secondary School (GSSS).
The initiative aims to cover children in the age group of 1 to 19 years through schools and Anganwadi Centres under a fixed-day approach, ensuring maximum outreach and effective implementation.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Mr. Ravinder Kumar, Director of Social Welfare, stressed the need for close coordination and collaborative efforts between the Education and Health Departments for the successful implementation of the de-worming programme. He underlined the importance of sustained awareness and participation to safeguard the health and well-being of children.
Ms. Archana Singh, Principal of Government Girls Senior Secondary School and guest of honour, highlighted the significance of National De-Worming Day and the role of educational institutions in ensuring that children receive timely preventive healthcare.
To formally launch the programme, Albendazole tablets were administered to children by the chief guest and other dignitaries present at the event.
Health officials stated that the campaign seeks to improve the overall nutritional status, growth and development of children by reducing the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections across the Union Territory.
