The National Newborn Week (NNW) will be observed across the country from November 15 to 21 with the theme “Newborn Safety: Every Touch, Every Time, Every Baby.” The theme underscores the urgent need to prioritize newborn safety at every stage of care, an issue of critical importance in India’s health landscape.

Health officials have emphasized that the neonatal period remains the most vulnerable phase in a child’s life, with a significant number of mortality and morbidity cases still reported each year due to preventable causes such as infections and unsafe care practices.

As part of the observance, the public has been urged to cooperate with Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) during their community visits. These visits will focus on follow-up assessments of all newborns, particularly low birth weight infants and babies recently discharged from Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs).

The week-long initiative aims to reinforce a culture of safety — whether through the actions of health workers, the involvement of parents, or strengthened hospital systems. The message is clear: every baby must be protected, every procedure must be safe, and every decision must be taken with utmost care and vigilance.
