In a joint operation spanning two days, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Kolkata, in close coordination with Andaman & Nicobar Police, carried out a massive disposal and destruction operation of 1156 kilograms of Methamphetamine, a potent psychotropic substance. The drugs, estimated to be worth a staggering ₹2300 crores in the local market, were disposed of through incineration, following all legal aspects and norms.
The meticulous disposal operation took place on July 25 and July 26, 2023, and was meticulously supervised by prominent officials from both agencies. Mr Rakesh Chandra Shukla, Zonal Director NCB, Kolkata, and Mr Kalaivanan R, IPS, Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District, played crucial roles in overseeing the operation. The entire initiative was conducted under the overall supervision of Ms. Monika Ashish Batra, Deputy Director General, Eastern Region, NCB, and Mr Sanjay Kumar Tyagi, IPS, DIG (CID) A&N Police. Representatives from the A&N Pollution Control Board and Anti-Narcotics Cell of CID, A&N Police, were also present during the disposal process, ensuring adherence to environmental regulations and proper protocol.
The significant quantity of methamphetamine had been seized by the NCB during a joint operation with the Indian Coast Guard, Port Blair on September 21, 2019. In connection with the seizure, six Myanmarese nationals were arrested and are presently lodged at District Jail, Prothrapur.
The disposal operation took place at the Incinerator of G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair, with the valuable assistance of the local administration and hospital authorities. The Andaman Police actively provided support throughout the entire disposal process, emphasizing their commitment to collaborate in eradicating the drug menace from the picturesque emerald islands.
The successful disposal of these narcotics marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and abuse in the region. The NCB reaffirms its dedication to working hand in hand with the Andaman & Nicobar Police to create a drug-free environment on the islands, with the cooperation of all stakeholders.
