In a move aimed at bolstering disaster response capabilities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a five-day intensive training programme on Collapse Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) and Medical First Responder (MFR) was successfully conducted from June 2 to 6 at the Conference Hall of the A&N Fire and Emergency Services Training Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram.

Organised for the personnel of the Fire and Emergency Services Department—who serve as frontline responders during emergencies—the training was led by an expert team from the Regional Response Centre, Fourth Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Port Mout.

Over 80 personnel participated in the training through both offline and virtual modes, making the programme accessible to a wider group. The sessions focused on advanced techniques in search and rescue operations, including victim location and extraction from collapsed structures, and the administration of immediate medical aid in disaster scenarios. Emphasis was also placed on coordination during large-scale emergencies and application of life-saving methods.

The valedictory ceremony, held on June 6, was graced by Mr. Sunny Gupta, IPS, Superintendent of Police (Fire & Emergency Services/Nodal Officer, Disaster Management), who attended as the Chief Guest. In his address, Mr. Gupta highlighted the importance of such capacity-building initiatives and commended the NDRF for its steadfast commitment to disaster preparedness.

Participants shared that the training had significantly enhanced their knowledge and practical skills, equipping them better for real-time emergency situations.

The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony honouring the visiting NDRF team for their dedicated efforts, followed by a vote of thanks to the Chief Guest and all participants for their enthusiastic involvement.

This collaborative initiative between the NDRF and the Fire and Emergency Services Department underscores the Police Department’s commitment to creating a disaster-resilient community across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
