The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), RRC Andaman team successfully conducted a Mobilisation and Operational Drill at the Jirkatang check post on Thursday to assess and strengthen its preparedness for emergency situations.

The exercise was carried out under the supervision of Mr. Sridhar R., Assistant Commandant, with the objective of enhancing timely response capabilities and improving communication and coordination with local authorities during disaster scenarios. As part of the drill, a Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) operation was simulated to recreate realistic disaster response conditions. CSSR is a vital component of disaster preparedness, involving systematic search and rescue of victims trapped in collapsed or structurally compromised buildings.

As per the guidance of the 4th Battalion NDRF, Arakkonam, the RRC ANI team, led by Inspector Kunal Kaushik, was mobilised with 30 trained rescuers. The team was equipped with specialised tools and equipment for flood rescue, collapsed structure search and rescue, medical first aid, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) response. NDRF personnel are trained to respond effectively to a wide range of disasters, including floods, earthquakes, landslides and CBRN emergencies.

During the drill, the team simulated a complete emergency response sequence, demonstrating prompt mobilisation, efficient on-site operations and strict adherence to established safety protocols. Upon reaching the designated operation site, the team established communication with the 4th Battalion NDRF Headquarters using satellite phones and high-frequency (HF) radio sets, providing detailed, point-by-point updates on the progress of the exercise.

The successful conduct of the drill reaffirmed the NDRF’s commitment to maintaining high levels of operational readiness and ensuring swift, coordinated disaster response in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
