In a significant move toward enhancing mental health services nationwide, the Government of India (GoI) has introduced the Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele MANAS) program. The initiative aims to offer comprehensive, accessible, and affordable mental health care across all States and Union Territories (UTs) through 24×7 Tele-Mental Health Services.

Accessible via toll-free number 1800 891 4416 or short code 14416, the Tele MANAS helpline operates through an IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) for audio-based calls. The system incorporates a prompt auto-call back feature, ensuring timely assistance. Upon dialling, individuals will first connect with a trained Counsellor via the automated callback service. Based on the required level of care, the Counsellor will offer support within their expertise or direct the caller to specialised care.

For those needing specialised intervention, such as clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers, psychiatric nurses, or psychiatrists, the service will extend to include both audio and video-based options. In cases requiring urgent in-person consultations or complex evaluations, callers will be directed to the nearest physical consultation service for appropriate management.

The Tele MANAS Cell in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands operates from the ANIIMS campus, where trained Counsellors and Psychologists, under the guidance of Psychiatrists, attend to calls. Residents of the A & N Islands are encouraged to leverage the toll-free helpline 14416 for guidance and counselling regarding stress management, exam stress, family issues, addictions, phobias, and any other mental health concerns.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in prioritising mental health support and ensuring that individuals across the country have access to essential mental health services round the clock.
