In a major step towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the North and Middle Andaman district, the newly constructed building of Dr. RP Hospital was officially handed over last month. The project, executed through close coordination between the District Administration, APWD, Electricity Department, and the Directorate of Health Services, marks a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen medical services in the region.
The new hospital facility stands as a reflection of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration’s commitment to providing accessible, equitable, and quality healthcare to rural populations. The initiative was undertaken under the leadership of Chief Secretary Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS.
“This new facility at Dr. RP Hospital is a testament to our continuous efforts to provide quality and accessible healthcare to our rural communities,” said Ms. Nandini Maharaj, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman.
Designed with a strong emphasis on inclusivity, patient comfort, and functionality, the upgraded facility promises to significantly improve the accessibility and quality of healthcare services.
The ground floor features a range of critical units including a fully equipped Labour Room, Labour Ward, Post-Operative Ward, Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), Children’s Unit, and other essential departments. Specialist services in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics are also now available under the new setup.
To enhance patient experience, the facility includes a spacious waiting area and attached toilets in every ward to maintain hygiene and ensure dignified care. Accessibility has been prioritized with the installation of a lift and staircases, making movement across floors convenient for patients, attendants, and staff alike.
The first floor houses the male, female, and paediatric wards, along with dedicated rooms for Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). On the second floor, the Integrated Public Health Laboratory (IPHL) has been established, bolstering the hospital’s diagnostic and testing capacity.
This comprehensive expansion of infrastructure is expected to bring about a transformative improvement in healthcare delivery in North and Middle Andaman, enabling better, faster, and more efficient medical care for the rural population.
