Andaman & Nicobar Police has launched a comprehensive initiative to educate the public about the newly enacted criminal laws, namely the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita-2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita-2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam-2023. These landmark legislations will replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860; the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898; and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, respectively, and will come into effect on July 1, 2024.
Recognising the transformative impact of these laws on the criminal justice system, the A&N Police is committed to ensuring widespread awareness among all segments of society. Intensive training sessions have already been conducted for police personnel. Now, the focus shifts to extending this awareness to the general public through various outreach activities. These include street plays (Nukkad Nataks) and other innovative methods across different locations in the South Andaman District. Seven such programs have already been conducted, witnessing substantial participation from the general public.
These efforts aim to inform citizens about their rights and responsibilities under the new laws, fostering a safer and more cohesive community. The goal is to facilitate a seamless transition to the new legal regime and empower residents with the knowledge they need to navigate it effectively. Through interactive and informative initiatives, the A&N Police aspires to create a society where every individual understands and contributes to the enforcement of these laws.
The A&N Police invites all residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to actively participate in these awareness programs. By doing so, they can play a pivotal role in building a more informed and law-abiding society for the benefit of all.
