In a major stride towards women empowerment and the promotion of indigenous products, a Self Help Group (SHG) brand of Virgin Coconut Oil, NiCoShe, was officially launched at Nancowry during the Block Mela cum Tribal Food Festival commemorating the 79th Independence Day.

The product has been developed by the Manula Mathai Payuh Producer Group, a collective of local SHG members formed under the Deendayal Antyodya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission. The SHG women have come together to preserve and promote the rich Nicobari tradition of coconut-based products.

What sets NiCoShe apart is its preparation using the age-old Nicobari method of oil extraction, a traditional process that has recently earned Geographical Indication (GI) certification, highlighting its authenticity and cultural significance.

The brand name reflects its origins and purpose: “Ni” stands for Nicobarese Tribe, “Co” for Coconut, and “She” symbolizes the collective effort of SHG women who have worked tirelessly to bring the brand to life.

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is recognized globally for its multiple benefits. Its medicinal value includes boosting immunity, supporting heart health, aiding digestion, and helping manage diabetes. Its nutritional value stems from lauric acid, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids that promote overall wellbeing, while its cosmetic value makes it a natural choice for skincare and haircare, offering moisturization, healing properties, and anti-aging benefits.

The launch was presided over by Mr. Aditya Sangotra, DANICS, Assistant Commissioner, Nancowry, who unveiled the brand in the presence of Mr. Mohammed Yunus M, Block Development Officer, Nancowry, along with public representatives, SHG members, and a large gathering of citizens.

Speaking at the event, officials lauded the efforts of the SHG members for transforming a traditional product into a market-ready brand with the potential to showcase the Nicobar Islands on a broader platform while creating livelihood opportunities for tribal women.

NiCoShe will soon be available in markets at Sri Vijaya Puram, government outlets, airport stalls, and other key locations. Orders can also be placed via phone at 8900928267 and through the official Instagram page @manula_mathai_payuh.

The launch of NiCoShe represents more than a new product; it stands as a symbol of cultural pride, self-reliance, and economic empowerment for the women of Nancowry.
