In a pioneering initiative to foster youth engagement and promote intellectual sports, the North & Middle Andaman District Police, in collaboration with the Andaman Nicobar Chess Association (ANCA), organized the first-ever SP Cup Open Chess Tournament at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium, Rangat.
The one-day tournament drew enthusiastic participation from 81 players across the islands, who competed in seven rounds of intense chess battles. Participants from various age groups demonstrated impressive strategic thinking, discipline, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The valedictory ceremony was graced by Ms. Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, Superintendent of Police (N&MA District), who attended as the Chief Guest. In her address, she emphasized the importance of such initiatives in nurturing cognitive skills and character development in youth, while also highlighting the role of police in fostering positive community relations.
The event also saw the presence of Mr. Vikas Kumar, DANICS, Assistant Commissioner, Rangat, as Guest of Honour, along with Mr. Rajnikant Awadiya, DANIPS, SDPO Rangat. Local police officers, SI Benedict (In-charge, PS Rangat) and SI Abdul Sajeed, played key roles in organizing the tournament at the grassroots level.
After a day of competitive play, Sanjay Kumar (40), a resident of Mayabunder, emerged as the overall champion, while 13-year-old Sachit Bara from Sri Vijaya Puram secured the runner-up position. Trophies and certificates were distributed by the Chief Guest to top performers in various categories, with special appreciation for their dedication and sportsmanship.
The tournament served not only as a platform for budding chess enthusiasts but also as a testament to the N&MA District Police’s ongoing commitment to community development through educational and constructive engagement.
The district police have expressed their intent to organize similar events in the future to inspire and empower the youth of the islands.
