Andaman Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences is the only medical college in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The first batch of 55 students of ANIIMS completed their internship two months ago and are waiting for appointment to serve the Islands as per the surety bond signed by them during their admission into the MBBS programme in ANIIMS.

The Surety Bond makes these newly passed out MBBS Doctors liable to pay Rs. 10 Lakhs in case they do not serve the Andaman and Nicobar Administration for a period of 01 year. Further these doctors are also forbidden to leave India for a period of 05 years from the date of obtaining the degree.

To fulfil the conditions of Surety Bond as signed by them during their admissions these 55 passed out doctors have been running from pillar to post to get appointment under Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

According to them, post of 15 junior Residents in ANIIMS was first advertised and filled from those among the 55 passed out doctors and then it was cancelled on the day they went for their joining, citing Administrative Reasons.

Further according to the passed out doctors of ANIIMS, an order was passed which stated that all 55 passed out doctors will be recruited as Trainee Medical Officer for a renumeration of Rs. 25,000/- and the doctors protested the move, upon which the Secretary assured them of rightful post and salary.

Recently again these passed out doctors of ANIIMS were offered three month contract on different terms than before with a salary of Rs. 50,000/- which was accepted by them, considering they are needed during these difficult times of the pandemic.

They reached to collect their appointment orders but were made to wait till evening and later it was communicated to them that, the appointment has been cancelled.

The students allege that, there is no one to listen to their pleas and they do not know whom to approach.
