The recently concluded Lok Sabha polls in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands witnessed varying degrees of voter participation across its three districts. According to official figures released by the Election Commission, the final voter turnout for the archipelago stood at 63.99%.
Among the three districts, North and Middle Andaman District emerged with the highest voter turnout, recording an impressive 72.90%. Conversely, South Andaman District, despite being the most developed, recorded the lowest voter participation at 59.59%.
In Nicobar District, the voter turnout was reported to be 72.77%, indicating a relatively strong engagement in the electoral process.
Delving into the tehsil-wise data, Nancowry Tehsil stood out with the highest voter turnout at 80.89%, showcasing a robust civic engagement. On the other end of the spectrum, Port Blair Tehsil recorded the lowest turnout at 54.50%.
The electoral roll boasted a total of 3,15,148 registered voters across the islands. However, only 2,01,671 voters exercised their franchise on polling day, reflecting a significant gap between registered voters and actual turnout.
With the ballots cast and the electronic voting machines (EVMs) sealed, the fate of the 12 candidates vying for the lone parliamentary seat in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will only be revealed on June 4, 2024 (the day fixed for counting of votes).
The election results, when unveiled, will not only determine the political landscape of the islands but also reflect the pulse of its residents in shaping the future trajectory of governance.
