The North & Middle Andaman District Police has taken a unique step by introducing “HUNAR,” a creative and innovative project aimed at engaging Andaman’s youth in skill development courses. The initiative seeks to reduce victimisation and prevent their involvement in criminal activities. Under the banner of Community Policing Initiative, the program was flagged off under the leadership of Ms. Geetanjali Khandelwal, IPS, Superintendent of Police for the district.
The introduction of “HUNAR” adds another feather to the cap of the North & Middle Andaman District Police, which has previously rolled out several initiatives to motivate and shape the career of the Union Territory’s youth, encouraging them to become responsible citizens of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Recognizing the limited employment opportunities for unskilled youth in the islands, the project aims to help them realize their potential, acquire critical skills, enhance employability, and steer them away from negative influences.
Ms. Geetanjali Khandelwal, IPS, Superintendent of Police for the North & Middle Andaman District, emphasized the vital role that youth play in the future and transformation of the Andaman Islands. She stated that the “HUNAR” initiative addresses core issues by simultaneously tackling social challenges such as crime, unemployment, and drug abuse, while also empowering youth to seize future opportunities. The community-driven initiative aims to redirect youth from negative influences and engage them in developing productive skill sets that contribute to the Island’s progress and development.
The N&M Andaman District Police has been actively undertaking various social initiatives for the district’s residents. In the first phase of the Skill Development Program, the youth and other residents will receive training and guidance in four short-duration courses: Bamboo work, Cane art, Papad making, and Candle making. Skilled and trained teachers will impart this knowledge, enabling participants to acquire job skills and secure meaningful employment. The program also aims to inspire entrepreneurship by equipping participants to start their own micro and small industries.
The launch of “HUNAR” reflects the commitment of the North & Middle Andaman District Police to the well-being and development of the youth. By providing skill development opportunities, the initiative aims to uplift the community and create a positive impact on the Andaman Islands.
