In a determined push towards eradicating tuberculosis (TB), the District TB Centre, District TB Unit, and District Health Society, North & Middle Andaman observed World Tuberculosis (TB) Day under the theme ‘Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.’ The highlight of the event was a motorcycle rally, flagged off by Ms. Nandini Maharaj, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman.

Around 70 motorcyclists participated in the rally, which traversed through Mayabunder Bazaar and Webi Junction, spreading awareness about TB with banners and placards. A mobile van accompanied the rally, broadcasting crucial messages about TB prevention across nearby villages.

Following the rally, a felicitation program was organized at the Conference Hall of Dr. R.P. Hospital, where the contributions of local leaders and health workers in the fight against TB were recognized.

Ms. Nandini Maharaj presented TB-Free Certificates and mementos to the Pradhan and Up-Pradhan of Gram Panchayats of Basantipur and Chainpur for maintaining TB-free status in their respective regions for 2024. Expressing gratitude for the recognition, both leaders acknowledged the collective efforts of their communities in achieving this milestone.

“Today, we stand united in our fight against tuberculosis,” remarked Ms. Nandini Maharaj during her address. “The theme of this year’s World TB Day highlights our shared responsibility. With unwavering commitment, strategic investment, and diligent delivery of healthcare services, we can envision a TB-free future.”

Dr. Alice Bwa, Medical Officer In-Charge, provided an overview of the current TB status in North & Middle Andaman and urged the public to actively participate as Ni-Kshay Mitras to contribute to the eradication of TB.

Certificates of Appreciation and mementos were also awarded to Ni-Kshay Mitras associated with Dr. R.P. Hospital, recognizing their invaluable support in ensuring TB patients receive timely care and treatment.

The program saw enthusiastic participation from around 100 attendees, including Medical Officers, hospital staff, ASHA workers, members of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI), and the general public. Their presence reflected the region’s collective resolve to combat TB and improve health outcomes.

With such collaborative efforts and continued commitment, North & Middle Andaman moves closer to achieving the goal of eliminating tuberculosis from the region.
