The Director General of Police (DGP), Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on Tuesday felicitated two Onge tribal Home Guard Volunteers for their crucial assistance in a major drug seizure case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Mr. Raja and Mr. Jhaj were honoured at a special ceremony held at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) for their exemplary dedication, courage and valuable support in the recovery of 6.979 kilograms of methamphetamine.

According to police, the recovery was made on January 16, 2026, during jungle foot patrolling near Pagla Mundi under the jurisdiction of Police Station Hut Bay. The contraband was found concealed beneath sand and dry foliage in dense forest terrain. The two volunteers played a pivotal role in detecting and recovering the methamphetamine.

Police officials noted that this is the first instance of members from a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) being inducted into active field operations and contributing to a major narcotics seizure. Their familiarity with the local terrain, keen observation skills and active participation significantly aided in locating the concealed drugs.

The DGP appreciated their sincerity, vigilance and sense of responsibility, stating that such cooperation between the community and the police strengthens law enforcement efforts and encourages wider public participation in maintaining peace and security in the Islands.

In recognition of their outstanding contribution, the DGP presented both volunteers with a cash reward of ₹10,000 each along with a Commendation Certificate (CC-I).

The Andaman and Nicobar Police reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement of narcotics laws and to making the Islands drug-free. Members of the public have been urged to share information related to crime, drug trafficking or other illegal activities by calling 112, 03192-232100 or 03192-236641.
