The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labor, Textiles, and Skill Development, chaired by Mr. Bharatruhari Mehtab, convened a significant meeting on November 4, 2023, to address labour-related concerns in various organizations. The Committee met with representatives from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE Ltd), the Ministry of Defence (Department of Defence Production), the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), the Ministry of Finance (Department of Financial Services), India Overseas Bank, and the State Bank of India.
The primary focus of the discussions centered on “Contractual Appointments/Deployments and Implementation of Labour Laws concerning the welfare of Contract/Casual Workers.”
The committee’s session took place at the prestigious Hotel Taj Exotica on Swaraj Dweep.
The initial segment of the meeting involved a conversation with the management of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE Ltd) and the Ministry of Defence (Department of Defence Production). The discussions aimed to explore the implementation of labour laws concerning the welfare of contract and casual workers within GRSE Ltd.
The committee also directed their attention towards the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and discussed similar concerns regarding contractual appointments, deployments, and labour laws, with a particular focus on the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Subsequently, the committee extended their dialogue to India Overseas Bank & the Ministry of Finance (Department of Financial Services), and the committee scrutinized the contractual appointments, deployments, and the implementation of labour laws within India Overseas Bank, again with specific reference to the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Lastly, the committee turned its focus towards the State Bank of India. In this case, the discussion was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance (Department of Financial Services), and the committee scrutinized the contractual appointments, deployments, and the implementation of labour laws within the State Bank of India, specifically with reference to the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
