Pathetic Condition of Public Urinal at the Heart of Port Blair City

Port Blair, 5th October 2021

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is known for its cleanliness and for the better public facilities than available at most places in mainland India. The tourists who visit the Islands often praise the cleanliness and the public facilities available in the Islands.

A urinal right in the heart of Port Blair city beside the Auto Stand at Aberdeen Bazaar, Port Blair is in pathetic condition. The urinal has no door, no running water and no taps. There is no facility for people to flush after they use the urinals.

The condition of the urinal is so pathetic that it is unbearable for a person to even look at it. The smell is pathetic and the drainage of the urinals are clogged. There is a tank outside the urinal but the auto-rickshaw drivers informed Nicobar Times that water is not supplied to the tank and hence they are dependent on the rains for the tank to fill.

The broken door also causes problems for those using the urinal since it is a high-footfall area, every now and then people pass by the area.

The urinal building has been painted well from the outside but nobody has cared to renovate or repair the inside of the urinal building.

The users of the urinal are also to be blamed for the condition because paan stains can be found everywhere inside and it seems the users never cared to keep it clean after use.

The lack of running water is the prime reason for the present state of the urinal. Some auto-rickshaw drivers informed Nicobar Times that they had also written a letter to PBMC about the condition of the urinal but no one cared to repair it.

The authorities at Port Blair Municipal Council should take note of the condition of the urinal in the heart of Port Blair city and should take action to improve its hygiene.
