A Pawan Hans helicopter travelling from Sri Vijaya Puram to Mayabunder came down into the sea off Mayabunder on Tuesday, in what is most likely a controlled emergency landing. All passengers, including a child, and both pilots were safely rescued.
According to sources, the helicopter was approaching the Mayabunder helipad when it descended into the sea at a considerable distance from the shoreline. Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft was seen coming down slowly towards the water, suggesting that the pilots executed an emergency landing.
Though authorities have not yet officially confirmed whether the incident has been categorised as a crash or an emergency landing, initial information indicates that the descent was controlled.
Visuals from the scene showed a marine police boat stationed near the helicopter in the sea during the evacuation process. Both pilots were later seen seated in a fibre boat of the Police Marine Force.
All occupants were safely evacuated and shifted to the District Hospital at Mayabunder for medical examination and treatment. Sources confirmed that a child onboard is also safe.
The cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained. Further details are awaited from the concerned authorities.
