In response to the growing concerns surrounding mental health and substance abuse in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair Guru Ki Rasoi (PBGKR), a charitable society renowned for its welfare initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic, has proposed the establishment of a Psychiatry and De-Addiction Centre in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This facility aims to provide affordable and comprehensive mental health care and de-addiction services to the residents of the islands.

The proposal, detailed in a letter submitted to the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, underscores the urgent need for such a facility in the face of a notable surge in drug use. The founder and president of PBGKR, Mandeep Grewal, has also held discussions with key officials, including the previous Chief Secretary and the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, to garner support for the initiative.

The proposed Psychiatry and De-Addiction Unit aims to address critical mental health and addiction issues through a multi-faceted approach. Key aspects of the initiative include:

1. Enhancing Mental Health Care: Providing specialized psychiatric services for diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental health disorders.

2. Addiction Recovery Programs: Implementing evidence-based de-addiction interventions to support individuals struggling with substance abuse.

3. Community Outreach: Conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public and reduce stigma associated with mental health and addiction.

PBGKR plans to collaborate with a Chennai based hospital led by a senior and prominent psychiatrist for the project. This partnership is expected to ensure the delivery of high-quality care by integrating medical, psychological, and social support systems.

The NGO has sought the administration’s assistance in identifying a suitable old or unused government building in Sri Vijaya Puram that can be repurposed to house the proposed facility. Utilizing an existing structure would expedite the project’s implementation while making efficient use of resources.

Mandeep Grewal emphasized that the centre would play a pivotal role in addressing the rising substance abuse problem in the islands. “The establishment of this unit will be a transformative step in tackling the mental health and addiction challenges faced by our community. With the support of the government and local authorities, we can ensure these services are accessible to those in need,” he said.

PBGKR gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic for its extensive relief efforts, including food distribution to the needy. Post-pandemic, the organization has continued its charitable endeavors, focusing on long-term community welfare projects. The proposed Psychiatry and De-Addiction Centre reflects their commitment to addressing pressing health and social issues in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
