Playground Development in Kakana Village to Generate 422 Person-Days of Employment under MGNREGA

Kakana Village in Nancowry Block, Nicobar District, marked a significant step towards holistic community development with the commencement of a new project for the development of a school playground. The initiative, launched on January 15, 2025, is being implemented under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a flagship program of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India.

The project was inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Mohammed Yunus M, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Nancowry Block, and is being spearheaded by Mr. Frazer James, 1st Captain of Kakana Village, along with support from the MGNREGA unit.

The playground development project will generate 422 person-days of work, providing employment to over 20 community members. Beyond livelihood generation, the initiative aims to promote healthy living and encourage physical activity among the local population, helping to prevent lifestyle diseases through engagement in sports and recreational activities.

Addressing the workers prior to the commencement of the project, the BDO, Mr. Mohammed Yunus M, emphasized the importance of utilizing government schemes for the betterment of the community. He urged the workers to identify local needs and collaborate under MGNREGA to fulfil them, fostering both employment opportunities and overall village development.

This initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to uplifting rural communities through sustainable development and the creation of meaningful assets that benefit both current and future generations.
