A school from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands has brought laurels to the Union Territory by winning the prestigious Wipro Earthian Awards 2025, which were presented at a ceremony held at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, on January 31, 2026.

The awards were hosted by Wipro Limited, a leading AI-powered technology services and consulting company, as part of the 15th edition of the Wipro earthian programme, an annual initiative that promotes integrated sustainability education among schools and colleges across India. The programme recognises institutions that demonstrate meaningful and sustained engagement with environmental sustainability.

The 2025 edition of the Wipro earthian programme received over 2,000 submissions from across the country. Following a rigorous evaluation process, an independent jury selected 25 winning teams for their innovative and impactful projects addressing key environmental themes such as biodiversity, waste, and water.

Among the awardees, PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, R.K. Pur, Little Andaman, emerged as the sole winning school from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The school’s project focused on understanding the importance of future custodianship of nature and highlighted the sustainable lifestyles of Little Andaman’s Indigenous communities, who have lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years.

The student team conducted surveys involving people from diverse backgrounds to document community perspectives on environmental conservation. Their work raised awareness about the ecological risks posed by monoculture practices, particularly large-scale Arecanut and Red Oil Palm plantations. Through interviews, role-plays and creative educational tools such as an Eco-Actions Snake and Ladder game, Biodiversity Card Game, wall murals and a pollinator garden, the students effectively communicated the message of coexistence between people and nature.

The project underscored the fragility of the local ecosystem, the cultural loss faced by Indigenous groups, and the urgent need to revive traditional practices that maintain ecological balance.

Certificates and cash prizes were presented to the winning teams by Mr. Anurag Behar, Chief Executive Officer, Azim Premji Foundation, and Mr. Narayan P. S., Global Head of Sustainability and Societal Initiatives, Wipro Limited, and Managing Trustee, Wipro Foundation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Narayan P. S. said that the strength of the Wipro earthian programme lies in grounding sustainability in lived realities. He noted that students across regions have moved beyond mere awareness to sustained engagement, approaching real-world environmental challenges with curiosity, rigour and empathy.

Since its launch in 2011, the Wipro Earthian programme has engaged with more than 51,000 schools, 2.1 lakh students and 41,000 teachers across India. Its outreach has expanded through collaborations with organisations such as the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), C.P.R. Environmental Education Centre (CPREEC), Wild Ecologues, IIT Madras, IIM Bangalore, state governments and educators within the Sustainability Educators Network.

The Wipro Earthian Awards reflect Wipro’s commitment to purpose-driven progress, translating its sustainability vision into consistent on-ground engagement and long-term community impact.
