Nicobar Times had earlier published a Video News Story on the issue of two fishermen being beaten by a police staff at Afra Bay. The fishermen had reportedly landed at the shore of Afra Bay to fetch drinking water during their fishing trip.
The Fishermen Community had also lodged an official complaint with the police and the issue was also actively taken up by Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman.
Sources within the police department have informed that the SDPO, Campbell Bay, and SHO, PS Campbell Bay, conducted an inquiry, and have reportedly recommended that the police staff involved in the incident be suspended. NCFIR has also been lodged under relevant sections against the police staff.
SDPO, Campbell Bay also reportedly briefed all police staff on the appropriate acceptable behavior with members of the general public.
Senior Officers of Police at Great Nicobar also held a meeting with the members of the fishermen community in the presence of Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman. The fishermen were asked to approach the nearest police outpost whenever they land in a tribal area due to any emergency.
The fishermen can now approach the concerned magistrate and demand that an investigation be conducted by the police on the NCFIR lodged.
The issue was also taken up at appropriate level by Mr. S U Maheshwar Rao, Governing Body Member, NFDB, Hyderabad.
