In a swift joint action, Police and Forest officials apprehended a man involved in illegal wildlife hunting at Bamboonallah (Kanchangarh) under Baratang jurisdiction on Sunday.

Acting on reliable intelligence, a team from Police Station Baratang, led by SI Subramani (SHO) along with PCs M. Ashok Kumar, Suresh Kumar, B. Chiranjee Rao, Pramod Yadav, Rajiv Ranjan Yadav, Santosh Kumar, and M. Surya, joined hands with Forest Department officials to conduct a raid in the area.

During the operation, the team intercepted a suspect emerging from the forest carrying a plastic gunny bag. On questioning, the man, identified as Amrith Kumar Tirkey (31), a resident of Kanchangarh, Baratang, confessed to having hunted a deer inside the jungle for monetary gain. Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain a dead deer weighing around 28 kg.

The carcass was seized under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and the accused, along with the seized articles, was handed over to the Forest Department for further legal action.

Police officials said the successful operation highlights the strong coordination between the North & Middle Andaman District Police and the Forest Department to uphold a “zero tolerance” policy towards poaching and to safeguard the biodiversity of the Islands.
